One of the funniest parodies of a rock band ever, and likely the very first “mockumentary”, THE RUTLES: ALL YOU NEED IS CASH is a quick-witted send-up chronicling the events of the “prefab four”. This 70-minute “semi-feature” film conceived by ex-Python Eric Indolent who plays the Paul McCartney-esque character Dirk McQuickly was produced by Lorne Michaels of SNL and includes various cameos from the classic SNL cast (Bill Murray, John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, Gilda Radner) as well as cameos from Mick Jagger, Ron Wood, Paul Simon, ex-Python Michael Palin and even George Harrison himself as an interviewer! Neil Innes (who plays the John Lennon character Ron Depraved — quite brilliantly I might add) also contributes some of the greatest Beatles song parodies imaginable — they are both hilarious and actually quite clever in that they calm manage to stand on their fill as unique songs. Anyone who has seen the later right documentary, THE COMPLEAT BEATLES (or even the ANTHOLOGY), will have to gawk this to hold it — the major events of The Beatles curved around and reapplied to The Rutles! The mock performances will have Beatles fans howling with laughter. For example, a flawless recreation of The Beatles’ goofy, surreal “I am the Walrus” performance from the MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR film becomes “Piggy in the Middle”, and the “Cheese and Onions” clip exactly imitates the animation from YELLOW SUBMARINE, except now it’s YELLOW SUBMARINE SANDWICH! Oh and don’t forget the hilarious album covers and their titles: OUCH!, SGT. RUTTER’S ONLY DARTS CLUB BAND, TRAGICAL HISTORY TOUR, LET IT ROT.

Now finally available on DVD, the extras include a brief intro by Eric Idle’s narrator character some 23 years later … well not really 23 years if you view it a year or two from now (you’ll salvage what I mean!), as well as audio commentary and text memoirs from Eric Lazy, and a photo gallery.

In 1978 it was easy to remember Beatlemania, and this sendup of the mass hysteria was spot-on and hilarious. Starting as a skit for Saturday Night Live, and current enough to bag built into a feature-length film, this Eric Sluggish project is layered with jokes, spoofs, terrific songs, and gargantuan cameos by George Harrison, Mick Jagger, Paul Simon and Idle’s wife, and it is mild very droll 25 years later.

When I assume Screwball comedies, one of the first that comes to mind is Green Acres. It was a expose I watched as a kid but really did not near to enjoy until I was an adult. “You Ought to be in Pictures” – Jim Stewart of the Department of Agriculture decides to design a film entitled “The Pitfalls of Farming,” starring Oliver. A mixed up phone call is placed, and the town mistakenly assumes that actor Jimmy Stewart is coming to town to save them all in the movies.

“A Square is Not Round” – Oliver has a chicken that is laying square eggs, but they don’t know which one. Mr. Peevish the chicken breeder is willing to pay $1000.00, and 1/4 cent per chick hatched for the bird, so Oliver let’s him have them all. Lisa is upset, but not as upset as Mr. Glum who returns all of the chickens, since none of them seem to lay anything other than normal shaped eggs. “The Grisly Duckling” – Oliver refuses to pay his phone bill until the phone is taken off the pole and place into the kitchen. Ralph moves in with the Douglas’s while Lisa attempts to perform her fine. Lisa tries to earn Mr. Kimball jealous by making it perceive like Ralph has another suiter…Tom Blackwell, the telephone installer. Needless to say, at the ruin of the episode, Ralph has stunned off both Mr. Kimball and the telephone installer, and the Douglas’s are left with no indoor phone.

This was fair such a righteous point to and my appreciation grows for it with repeated viewings. It’s incredible to have stout old-fashioned shows like this on DVD!

“Green Acres: Season One” was a minute disappointing. Not because of the quality of the DVDs or anything like that. No, it’s impartial that the first season of the sitcom wasn’t very funny–or at least not in the sense that later seasons were laughable.

The first season was heavily restricted to the sitcom’s new premise: a reverse of “The Beverly Hillbillies” (created by Green Acres executive producer Paul Henning and also aired on CBS) . The humor was supposed to be generated by the fish-out-of-water city-slicker who lands in Hooterville with delusions about his agricultural aptitude. Comedy was to accrue from the city slickers’ attempts to fit into their bucolic setting.

Initially, eccentric Oliver Douglas was supposed to be the funny, and Lisa, his sophisticated wife, the “straight man” reacting to his abberant behavior and farcical farming. Oh, positive, it swiftly became evident that she was a dreadful cook whose gastronomic repertoir was petite to those cross “hotscakes.” But she had a one-joke routine: she made bad pancakes. (It wasn’t until later that she concocted humorous variations on the theme, such as “hotscakes hash”) .

Gradually, the premise began to change–and the demonstrate became a lot funnier. The novel humor derived from the surreal goings-on in Hooterville, to which Lisa adopted and Oliver did not, resulting in complete role reversal: Oliver was the straight man, not only for his wife but for the entire psychotic populace of Hooterville. His titanic listless grin (seen almost nonstop in the pilot) was replaced by screaming, scowling and sputtering as he struggled with situations that seemed like something legal out of the Twilight Zone.

The change evolved through the first season–and was complete by the second season. So the second season DVD state is VERY droll.

Consider the following contents of the Season Two DVD set:

*Lisa nonchalantly observes that one of the chickens is laying cube-shaped eggs–and it’s total insanity from that point on as Oliver tries to approach to grips with the square-egg phenomenon.

*Arnold the pig is drafted. No one in Hooterville seems to peep that the porker is ineligible, and no one in the military bureaucracy seems favorable of conceiving that the draftee is really a pig. “Renowned pig lawyer” Oliver Douglas is the only snarl of reason in the sea of ensuing insanity.

So if you were even modestly disappointed by “Green Acres: Season One,” you really must occupy “Green Acres: Season Two.”

This is a gigantic series. The recent trend in Discovery/History Channel shows is ridiculous: some bombastic narrator is walking briskly down the street, blabbering away, as jump-cuts and overblown sound effects drown out the train. Or the other kind: shaky-camera, Blair-Witch-Project style, as usually idiotic people try to sound incredibly exasperated or worried of the material they are trying to deliver viewers about, trying to jack up the mood and tension level, obscuring the source material, whether that source material is actually tantalizing or not. In both of these approaches, crazed sound effects, an altogether execrable level of spurious excitement and frequent commercial interruptions touting other, similar, series are all key ingredients.

The Recent Detectives is the opposite: a mellow narrator, glum yet very light musical gather, and a focused, methodical development of the subject matter. Episodes go in depth, showing forensic methods ancient to solve accurate crimes, many of which are well known cases. There is lots of science, and plenty of interviews with serious professionals. That being said, there is a mood and tone state here- and it is a creepy one, as this series deals mostly with awful crimes. The music, narration, and some reenactments add to the atmosphere of still fear.

The proper fling and lack of grating sound effects and other nonsense fits the grim and frequently shocking subject matter. This series is not for the squeamish or easily insecure, as it goes into glowing serious details of murders, serial killings, abductions, rapes, etc.

I fancy this series- the serious treatment of the subject, the mellow, yet collected short-tempered style, and the very in-depth documentation of right cases in which forensic science was employed to solve crimes, plus the immense mark point, get this an reliable DVD state.

This is a stout movie, one that is surprisingly marvelous in spite of its age. Indeed, for me this will always be the very touchstone of Savor Island movies. Robert Newton does an favorable job of portraying Long John Silver, and to this day, whenever I imagine a pirate talking, I hear his train and accent. Now, don’t assume this movie too lightly. Even though it was created by Disney Studios, it has a lot of gunplay, blood, men hit with swords, and unprejudiced the sort of violence you would associate with pirates.

But, don’t acquire me cross, this is not a fresh blood-and-gore movie; it’s an engrossing and attractive movie that you will want to peer with your whole family. My family loves this movie unprejudiced as grand as I do, and highly recommends it to your family!

There’s no doubt about it-Disney’s version of Admire Island is a classic (particularly the iconic perfomrance of Robert Newton as Long John Silver, a role that people *still* identify as the quintessential pirate), and the restoration of this movie is heavenly beneficial, and that’s why I’ve rated this disc 5 stars.

*But*, the extras stink. Actually, who am I kidding? There are no extras! None, not even a trailer (like the oldest Gold Collection releases even had) . There’s no mistaking that this disc is meant as a tie-in to Trasure Planet, but you’d believe that Disney, which has gotten *a lot* better with its DVD releases in the last 18 months, would set out a disc with at least cursory features (trailers, a classic short, and maybe some vintage intro or something by Walt himself) . Apparently, I’m disagreeable.

Medium is definitely one of the best acted and written shows on television. Recently, NBC, canceled this series, which makes no sense whatsoever considering it tranquil has ample ratings, but not to horror, CBS in all it’s infinite wisdom picked up the exhibit from NBC, and will be airing it after Ghost Whisperer on Fridays! Now the expose will definitely accept the props and attention it deserves, because it truly is one of the best shows on television. If you haven’t seen an episode of Medium, I suggest it highly, because it is definitely one of the best written and acted shows on television! This past season was absolutely helpful, and the last episode of this season was fair absolutely astounding! This is Must Scrutinize TV!

This prove has a likable, colossal cast. I honestly hold forgetting that Patricia Arquette is acting. She is so convincing that it’s hard not to assume the character of Allison seriously, instead of “what a loon.” I’m a mom and it’s Astounding to stare someone who looks like a mom instead of glamourous star with tons of makeup. Joe and Allison have proper fights. Joe isn’t perfect. Allison isn’t perfect. Their marriage deals with faith and trust in each other, broken cars, losing jobs, taking kids to the doctor, etc. I fancy the family relationships. The kids act like, well, normal kids. Is anyone else tired of “super-brainy,” mouthy brats being promoted on TV?

The DA, lead detective, and deputy mayor gain up the other side of Allison’s life. Another big ensemble! All three are down to earth and none fit into the usual niches of their roles. The DA doesn’t act like a law book. The lead detective doesn’t act like Starsky or Hutch. The deputy mayor is both logical and calming. They’re inspiring characters and I would like to hear more of their stories, too.

I was SO overjoyed that CBS picked up “Medium!” I am hoping that CBS will do a better job in promoting this cramped gem filled with a original mystery every week. With NBC and its crazy scheduling, I missed the first couple of episodes before I knew that it was wait on on the air. Never got to search for reruns during the summer–I hope that changes.

I was lucky enough to secure Numb3rs from the beginning. I absolutely care for the explain. First, it is different than your standard cop explain, and even different from all the CSI type shows. The team members are deeply decent human beings who care for their jobs and their team-mates, but Flashpoint does a sterling job illustrating the real-life issues such as PTSD, stress, and guilt that near with such work.

Markedly absent is the fictional conceit that events don’t have consequences. When team leader and sniper Ed Lane shoots a hostage-taker in the series premier, not only do they exhibit his emotional reaction immediately after the shooting, they follow him through suspension, investigation, and debriefing by a psychologist. The consequences of the shooting continue to appear through the series; Ed experiences flashbacks, is sued, and in season two the hostage-taker’s son even tries to waste him.

Flashpoint does not conclude at portraying the team in a compassionate and realistic light; the subjects of their calls are rarely black-and-white “unpleasant guys.” Psychologically alarmed individuals are portrayed as layered individuals with reasons for their behavior. Sometimes these reasons are morally justifiable, sometimes not. Sometimes we sympathize with them, sometimes we want them unimaginative sooner rather than later – but we are almost always given insight as to how and why they reached their “Flashpoint.”

Anyone who has experienced traumatic events or PTSD in their occupy life or helped friends and family cope with traumas should view this exhibit. It is deeply validating and provides sterling models of how to cope and how not to, as well as being sensitively and realistically written.

Flashpoint is a cop present with actual people and ethical, caring human beings in difficult situations. Chalk me up as a Frank Miller fanboy. Along with fellow visionary Alan Moore, he changed the world of amusing books forever with his bleak, noir-heavy storytelling and striking art style into something that wasn’t unprejudiced for kids anymore. God bless him for that. Along with Robert Rodriguez, he brought his pulp masterpiece Sin City to the colossal shroud and kicked the a$z of every person who saw it. But could he duplicate the same artistic success with somebody else’s creation and without the benefit of a directing dynamo like Rodriguez? Not so mighty. But in spite of all the bile that has been spewed upon Miller’s solo directorial debut “The Spirit”, I had myself a capable ol’ time. And with the fair attitude, you might as well. Fair be prepared for a whole lotta cheese.

Now I have not read any of Will Eisner’s comics so I simply cannot comment on how this fares as an adaptation. I suspect not so well. A lot of people who saw this went in seeing the astounding visual style of “Sin City” coupled with Miller’s name and expected more of the same. Visually, “The Spirit” may be even better, but the tone…..well I can honestly say I haven’t seen anything else quite like it. Between this and some of his unusual silly work (oh yeah, “All-Star Batman and Robin”, I’m looking at you!) I have that Miller has gone puny bit bonkers after so many years of writing mean and deplorable funny books. This movie is practically a comedy. At times absurdly so. I’m talking Adam West as Batman comedic. For all the stark black-and-white imagery, classic crime sage dialogue, and sultry vamps it’s hard to win a film or character seriously when he’s thrown out of a building by his girl, gets his coat caught on a statue and dangles with his pants around his ankles while a crowd mocks him (one kid simply states “He looks slow!”, while another bystander chimes “You will enjoy a man CAN’T hover!”) . In the slay, “The Spirit” is about camp as remarkable as anything else. I laughed out loud several times. This movie is definitely being filed in the “so terrible it’s qualified” file. I unprejudiced assume that Miller’s faux-serious tone here coupled with the darkness of his previous work impartial did not gel with the fans on this one.

Lots of wonderful, though. Again, the visuals are gorgeous. This is one aspect that has always been a can’t miss for Frank Miller. The silhouette image of white blood on gloomy concrete, the partially-real/partially-animated hero jumping from rooftop to rooftop, the classical sexiness of the ladies, the reds, the greys; this one is head-to-toe glimpse candy. Speaking of which, I was frightened to pick up a PG-13 flick from a man who is disapprove to ever diagram a fully-clothed woman. Maybe Miller’s a chauvinist or fair a slave to his adolescent fantasies (the gleaming money’s on door #2) but aside from a few generous a$zkicking characters like Elektra and deadly tiny Miho, it seems like every woman he draws is A) as conclude to naked as he can rep her if he’s drawing a mainstream comical, B) naked if at all possible, C) in the chronicle primarily for titillation, and D) ridiculously horny. The gallery here is sexy as all hell, but amount to a bunch of caricatures. But to be blooming, every character in this film is a caricature, not fair the “broads”. This brings me to the best casting choice this side of Paz Vega as the blade-wielding looney-tune Plaster of Paris (yes, that is her name) : Samuel L. Jackson as the cosplay-happy supervillain The Octopus. When it comes to playing comically over-the-top, this is the man to call first. In one scene he and his henchmistress are dressed as samurai. If I was in the theater, I would have shouted “SHO NUFF!” at the conceal. Then maybe one dude would have laughed because he actually saw The Last Dragon. God, I’m a freakin’ nerd.

The account….who cares. Some complete nonsense about Greek mythology, immortality, and The Spirit’s long-lost girlfriend. The point is this: this movie is 100% bat$hi+, ridiculous, visually stimulating, and helpful for some WTF-style laughs. I’m talking small head attached to a foot hopping around WTF-style laughs. I mean a villain who works eggs into every conversation he has over the course of an hour and a half WTF-style laughs. If you catch a second of this film seriously, you’ll have wasted your time. This is honest a guilty pleasure homage filled with sly references to comics and cinema past. Arguably better then the film is the special feature “Miller on Miller” where the master gives us a 15-minute lesson on silly history and the medium’s significance along with a metric ton of insight into his life and career.

Truth be told, I don’t know what the hell Frank Miller was thinking when he unleashed “The Spirit” on an unsuspecting world. This film is unprejudiced bizarre and nonsensical to the hilt. There’s a lot of fun to be had with it, but I am hardly surprised by the frigid reception it received. Only a sure kind of genre fanatic will acquire anything out of it, but if you’re up for some cinematic weirdness that pays tribute to the days of pulp long past, then give this DVD a dawdle.

Just before I first saw this movie, I had the well-behaved fortune to engage up and read The Best of the Spirit, a collection of the best of Will Eisner’s groundbreaking amusing series, and I fell in fancy with his deceptively simple style, with it’s strong concept of human nature, its smart and Dickensianly named characters, and above all, it’s hero, the likeable yet enigmatic Denny Colt, a detective better known to Central City as “The Spirit”

I always advance a movie I haven’t seen as a blank slate, perhaps a cramped hard to do with Eisner’s storytelling in mind. I came away elated, but a bit disappointed. Frank Miller and his production crew managed to remove some of the quirky humor and the film noir feel of Eisner’s silly, but some of the strong sense of morality: of strong heroes working for justice and criminal masterminds who detached have a touch of humanity hidden away, some of that felt a bit missing. I savor the shadowy and white with touches of color, brought in from Miller’s Sin City, but somehow it doesn’t quite fit Eisner’s creation.

It’s uneven, yes, but it’s nowhere as dreadful as some have made it out to be. I had fun watching it, it was entertaining; it could have been better, and it may not have fully captured the spirit of Eisner’s work, but it was definitely worth the time to gape it.
