Toddler refusing to eat and drink, help!?
Hi there,
My 18 month old boy is refusing to eat or drink anything at all! He has had a cold and cough for the last five days and has been to the doctors two days ago who prescribed Calpol. I thought the cold was on it’s way out but yesterday and this morning he has refused to eat and drink anything at all. I have tried and tried and tried to get him to drink a wide variety of liquids from an equally wide variety of vessels but still, no luck! He will not try frozen liquids in the form of popsicles either. He is generally a very fussy child who only likes about 3 foods but he loves his milk. What’s going on? Is it his throat? He seems to have been ill for ages now, shall I take him back to the Doctors? Thanks in advance!
I think he’s feeling better now actually. He’s had a yoghurt, a small glass of orange juice, a tiny piece of toast and two half cups of milk and is taking a nap.
I’m not a doctor, but when my son gets very fussy about his food I suspect some kind of infection: ear infection likely but maybe even sinus. This is very possible since your son had a cold recently.
I’d try to continue to get him to eat but don’t get him upset… he might just start refusing as a form of power if you bother him too much. Try to even get him to take little sips of drinks. Some doctors recommend soda, some don’t, but I’d even try that. Maybe you could try to get him to eat something salty that he likes (chips, popcorn, pretzels) and all that salt could make him thirsty.
Make an appointment to see your son’s doctor. If it is an infection, you don’t want it to get worse. Good luck!

Take him back to the doctor and make sure there isn’t anything wrong with him. Children go through cycles where for a while they will eat something and then they wont.

Oh poor baby. i would take him back to the doctor. My son went through this exact thing this last week and a half. I took him to the doctor and initially they told me it was just a cold. Then the next day he was worse. He would not eat or drink and would cough so much he could not breath. I took him in and they tested him for RSV and it came back positive. Poor little guy was so sick we almost had to hospitalize him. He was on 6 different medications including breathing treatments. It has almost been 2 weeks and he just barely is getting over it. To keep your son hydrated you may have to force him to drink using a medicine dropper. Also try jello. That was the only thing my son would eat while he was sick and his throat was not even red. It was just that he would begin to cough and then choke if he tried to eat. Also try applesauce or some runny ish mashed potatos. anything soft. Call the doctor first thing. I hop[e he gets better.

Try pedialite or some juice mixed with water. I am going through the same thing. My son will drink juice mixed with water. That is about it. Usually he loves milk but won’t take anything.
Give it another day and call the doctor.
